Before You Order Anything
If you order vehicle electronics for a fleet or workshop, this checklist is for you. It's the process I use after eight years of buying jump starters, battery chargers, dashcams, and in-vehicle tech—and making 11 documented mistakes totaling about $6,800. There are 8 steps. Step 5 is the one almost everyone skips; I skipped it once and it cost me $920.
Step 1: Build a Vehicle and Battery Spec Sheet
Every order starts with a spreadsheet. Vehicle make, model, year, engine size, battery group size, and CCA rating. It's not glamorous, but it's the difference between ordering what you need and ordering what you think you need.
In February 2022, I ordered ten NOCO GB20 jump starters for our light service vans. They looked good on paper: compact and about half the price of bigger units. When they arrived, I tested one on a diesel box truck. It cranked twice and gave up. Ten units, $1,280, and a three-week return cycle. An engine-size column would have caught it before the PO went out.
Step 2: Size the Jump Starter for the Hardest Vehicle in the Fleet
Ordering for the average vehicle is a trap, because the average vehicle rarely needs a jump at 6am on a cold morning. The one that does is the diesel box truck. Here's how we tier it now:
- GB20 / GB30: compact cars, light utility vehicles, up to about 4L gas
- GB40: the default for most light trucks and passenger vans
- GB70: V8 gas trucks and some smaller diesels
- GBX75: the strongest NOCO jump starter we deploy, rated at 4,250 peak amps (manufacturer spec sheet). Reserved for the diesel fleet.
I used to think the GB40 was enough for everything until a Kenworth refused to start at a job site in January 2023. The GB40 in the truck couldn't do it. We paid $180 for a service call and sat idle for three hours. If you ask me, the extra cost of the GBX75 is insurance, not a luxury. You're paying for delivery certainty, not just crank amps.
Step 3: Know the Difference Between a Maintainer and a Charger
A lot of search queries say "NOCO battery tender" when what you actually need depends on the job: a maintainer or a charger. They're not the same thing.
- A maintainer like the GENIUS1 outputs 1A. It keeps a healthy battery topped up over weeks of storage.
- A smart charger like the GENIUS5 charges at 5A, then switches to maintenance mode. It can recover a depleted battery overnight.
We standardized on GENIUS1s because they were cheap. Then two vehicles failed to start after a weekend on "the tender." The 1A output couldn't keep up with the parasitic draw from onboard electronics. We swapped to GENIUS5s across the fleet circa 2022. The price difference was about $40 per unit (note to self: the $30 saved on each GENIUS1 ended up costing more in service calls than the upgrade ever did). We haven't had a stranded-driver call from a dead battery since.
Step 4: Calculate Dashcam Power Draw Before You Install
Dashcams are a favorite add-on, and for good reason. We chose the VIOFO A139 Pro dashcam for our fleet—STARVIS 2 sensor, 4K front camera, reliable parking mode. But parking mode is exactly where the trouble starts.
In parking mode, the camera keeps recording after the truck is off. A three-day weekend can drain a healthy 100Ah battery below starting voltage. We skipped the hardwire kits on the first batch to save a few bucks per unit. Two vans died the same month. (I really should have known better.)
Now every A139 Pro goes in with an HK4-K hardwire kit, which has a built-in voltage cutoff. The camera shuts off before the battery drops too low. It costs more than a basic kit, and it's worth every cent the first time it saves a battery (mental note: order the kits together with the cameras, not after).
Step 5: Confirm Head Unit Fitment Before You Order
This is the step nobody wants to do, because it's tedious. But if you're ordering Android head units with Android Auto, check three things first:
- DIN size: single or double DIN? Confirm with the vehicle trim, not the listing photo.
- Mounting depth: the head unit has to physically fit behind the dash. This is the one that bit me.
- CAN bus adapter: make sure there's one specifically for your make and model, not a "universal" adapter.
In 2023, I ordered eight Android Auto head units for our F-150s. Three didn't fit because the mounting depth was about 15mm too deep for the dash cavity. $920 of inventory sitting useless, plus return shipping out of my budget (surprise, surprise: the supplier's "compatibility checker" doesn't account for fleet specs). Since then, I send the VIN and a dash photo to the supplier before every order. It's caught ten potential mismatches in 18 months.
Step 6: Match the Rooftop Tent to the Vehicle's Rack Rating
If your fleet includes Jeeps or SUVs used as mobile field stations, a rooftop tent gets real use. But "best Jeep rooftop tent" is rarely a simple answer—it depends on the rack.
The rating that matters is the dynamic load rating, not the static one. Static ratings assume the vehicle is parked. Dynamic ratings apply when it's moving. Factory roof racks are typically rated around 150 lbs dynamic. A 130 lb tent plus hardware pushes close to that limit before you add a person.
We ordered a tent for a Jeep Wrangler in 2023. It arrived, we checked the numbers, and it exceeded the dynamic rack rating. Resold it unused, $250 in freight gone. The lesson: verify dynamic rack ratings in the same call as the tent order.
Step 7: Add Spare Accessories to the Initial Order
This is the five-minute rule. Spend five minutes adding spares now, or spend two weeks waiting for them later. For NOCO chargers, add extra eyelet terminals and X-Connect adapters. For the A139 Pro, add spare CPL filters and mounts. For the Android head units, order the specific GPS antenna and harness adapters—not the universal ones (which, honestly, are rarely universal in practice).
These parts cost a few dollars each. The downtime from waiting for a $6 connector is not worth measuring.
Step 8: Keep a One-Page Spec Sheet Per Vehicle
Last step: create a single page per vehicle with battery type, CCA rating, alternator output, installed electronics and their draw, assigned NOCO charger and jump starter model, and install dates. When a new technician joins the crew, this sheet answers half their questions before they're asked. When a vehicle comes in with an electrical issue, it gives you a baseline instead of a guessing game.
Mistakes I Still See Repeated
Three things keep showing up, even from buyers who've been at this longer than me:
- Ordering by brand name without matching the product tier to the vehicle. NOCO builds excellent gear, but a GB20 won't start a diesel and a GENIUS1 won't revive a dead battery.
- Buying unbranded hardwire kits or adapters to save money. The $20 saving usually turns into intermittent electrical issues that cost far more to diagnose.
- Assuming all "peak amp" ratings are comparable. Check the manufacturer's spec sheet, not just the box art.
On the broader point: the cheapest option tends to stop being cheap the first time it fails at the worst possible moment. Dead vehicles don't follow schedules, and a truck that won't start can cost ten times the price difference in downtime alone. There's a quiet satisfaction in knowing every vehicle in the fleet starts on the first try—even after a long weekend. That's what the right specs, and the right size, give you.
