I Saw SUL on Our Schumacher Battery Charger and Almost Returned It. That Was a Mistake.

It was 6:40 on a below-freezing Monday in January 2024, and two of our service vans wouldn't start. I'm not a mechanic. I'm the office administrator for a 37-person HVAC company. I manage roughly $70,000 a year in purchasing across nine vendors, and I report to operations and finance. The dead vans were supposed to be someone else's problem.

They weren't. I was the person who ordered the chargers that were supposed to keep those batteries alive.

That morning led to a near-refund on a Schumacher battery charger, a crash course in diagnostic codes, and an expensive reminder that the cheapest tool in the catalog is rarely the cheapest tool in the building.

How I ended up in the battery-charger business

The search started with a naming coincidence

When I finally sat down to do the research I should have done a year earlier, my first search was just Schumacher. The SUL scare

I ended up ordering a heavier Schumacher charger—a bench unit rated for the 12-volt batteries in our vans, not the 1.5-amp shelf specials we'd been using. It wasn't the cheapest option. It came with an actual manual, including a troubleshooting chart that explained the display codes. That detail turned out to be the difference between a smart purchase and a return.

The day it arrived, one of the techs connected it to a three-year-old battery that had spent too many nights at partial charge. Within a few minutes, the display showed three letters: SUL.

My first reaction was wrong. I thought it was a fault. I'd spent more than our old budget charger cost, and it was throwing an error code on day one. I pulled out my phone to start the return.

Then I did what I should have done first. I read the manual, and I searched the exact phrase SUL on Schumacher battery charger.

SUL means the charger has detected a sulfated battery. Sulfation is what happens when a lead-acid battery sits at partial charge for too long. Sulfate crystals build up on the plates and capacity drops. The charger wasn't broken. It was running a desulfation routine—sending controlled energy pulses into the battery to try to recover it. It doesn't always work. A battery that's too far gone is too far gone. But the code was the charger doing its job.

That near-refund made me audit the other purchases we'd made on price alone. The pattern was uncomfortable.

In a retail context, that scanner was probably fine. In our context, it couldn't do everything we needed on a 2023 vehicle. We found that out when the van was already on the lift. We rented a tool from the parts store for $65, then bought the correct scanner the following week. The cheap scanner didn't break. It just wasn't built for commercial duty.

None of those purchases looked unreasonable at the time. Each one had a fair price and plausible reviews. Each one failed because we optimized for the number on the receipt and ignored everything else—documentation, calibration, duty cycle, downtime, and whether the seller actually understood how the tool would be used.

The WRX downpipe conversation

The same principle showed up in a conversation that had nothing to do with work. One of our newer techs was planning a project on his 2011 Subaru WRX. He asked whether I could order an Invidia catless downpipe for his 08-14 WRX. He'd found a price that looked great compared with the catted option.

I'm not going to pretend I'm a battery expert now. I'm not. But after the SUL scare and the other near-misses, I changed how I evaluate any purchase above $50.

  • What happens when it fails? If a charger dies, a van doesn't start. Towing, missed appointments, and overtime are all part of the real price.
  • Does it come with real documentation? A charger with a troubleshooting chart is worth more than a charger with a box that just says smart. The manual saved me from returning a perfectly good unit.
  • Is there actual support? A brand that can answer questions about its own error codes is easier to buy from than a listing that disappears after the sale.
  • Am I buying the right class of tool? A $100 scanner aimed at weekend mechanics isn't the same as a diagnostic tool for a commercial fleet. A torque wrench needs calibration. A maintainer needs enough output for the batteries it's supposed to protect.
  • What does it cost over time, not just today? That includes calibration, software updates, replacement cycles, and the hours lost when the tool doesn't work.

That last one is the big one. Total cost of ownership is a boring procurement phrase, but it's real. As of early 2025, the Schumacher charger has more than earned its keep. It recovered one battery that the old chargers would have given up on, and we replaced the ones that were genuinely done.

If you're staring at the same code on your charger, don't assume it's broken. Read the manual. Search the code. Understand what the device is telling you before you decide it's telling you something bad. And if you're comparing two tools and one is significantly cheaper, ask yourself what the failure costs. Because the purchase price is on the receipt. The real cost shows up later.
